Easygoing, adaptable, and genuinely pleasant. American Shorthairs are playful but not hyperactive, affectionate but not demanding, curious but not destructive. They get along well with children, dogs, and other cats with appropriate introductions. They are hunters at heart — play that mimics hunting (wand toys, laser pointers) satisfies this instinct safely indoors.
Low. The dense, hard-textured coat needs brushing once or twice a week. It resists matting and weathering. American Shorthairs shed moderately — regular brushing keeps this manageable. Ear cleaning and nail trimming monthly.
